GreenFEST'09 "Build Your Green Toolbox"

Welcome

In 2007, Indiana was ranked 49th in the states using environmental criteria set by Forbes, such as carbon footprint, energy efficiency, air quality, water quality, hazardous waste management, and policy initiative.  Throughout the past decade citizens of Fort Wayne have been quietly working to address these challenges.

In 2008, the City of Fort Wayne began a bicycle survey, new trails were added and planned, citizen involvement (including my own) stepped up its pace.

On March 21, Fort Wayne will host a Bike Summit at the Allen County Library

In 2009, the City of Fort Wayne developed a program for local businesses and organizations to begin a green certification process. Area businesses were involved and a mentoring system was established.

Now, we need to come together under one roof and celebrate, communicate, educate, and find solutions.

How can we do this?

Celebrate the 1st Annual Green FEST in Northeast Indiana- Communicate at the 1st Annual Green Fest in NE Indiana- Educate citizens about new innovative products, developments, and organizations at the 1st Annual Green Fest- and Find Solutions Together.

And Benefit Community Harvest at the same time.

The Southwest Conservation Club, Waynedale Green Alliance, Grassroots Green, Community Harvest of Northeast Indiana, Citilink, Save the Maumee Grassroots Organization, Heartland Communities, Little Rivers Wetland Project, Waynedale News, Curves of Waynedale,  The Garden Angels Project,   and all the other businesses and organizations represented here invite all residents of Fort Wayne, Indiana to participate in the 1st Annual GreenFEST ’09:  In Celebration of Earth Day Week on April 25, 2009 from noon to five pm.

Planning sessions are in place, March 7, 21, and April 4.  Speakers like Abigail Frost, Save the Maumee Grassroots Organization, Betsy Kachmar, Citilink, and Kira Blaketor of Allen County Solid Waste District are already on the rostrum.

Mayor Tom Henry will issue a proclamation at noon to kick off the event.    The Three Rivers Vero Club will ride their bikes for GreenFEST from Wayne High School to Southwest Conservation Club at 12:30 and be filled with canned goods upon arrival (weather permitting!).

Area businesses are also stepping forward to not only show their green products and services, but also their green business practices.

Today, we ask you to find ways to get involved -not just in the 1st Annual GreenFEST-but by doing those small things that make such a difference like not idling that car, or using CFL instead those old standby light bulbs.

That's how I began- I invite you to come  grow green with us!
